Theatergruppe Hetzerath e.V. is an amateur theatre group based in Hetzerath in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Founded in 1986, it stages plays from the international repertoire and its own productions, and also presents Kleinkunst and satire evenings with its own texts and songs.[1][2]
History
The group started with short sketches and improvised games; it dates its founding to 1 August 1986, when regular rehearsals for full-length plays began. Its first productions were staged in the gymnasium of the Hetzerath primary school, which the members converted for each run. In June 2016 the group was registered as an association.[1] It had 18 members in 2017,[3] 21 at the end of 2021,[4] 19 at the end of 2023[5] and 20 in 2026.[6]
For the 950th anniversary of Hetzerath in 2018, the group organised an Anne-Frank-Projekt under the patronage of the Minister-President of Rhineland-Palatinate. Besides its own production of Das Tagebuch der Anne Frank, the project included the touring exhibition Lasst mich ich selbst sein of the Anne Frank Zentrum in Berlin, lectures and research into the history of the last Jewish family of Hetzerath. Partners included the Emil-Frank-Institut in Wittlich, the support association of the Hinzert concentration camp memorial and the Catholic adult education service of the Wittlich deanery.[7][3] Pupils from five schools in the region were trained by the Anne Frank Zentrum as peer guides to lead visitors through the exhibition.[3][8] The five performances in November and December 2018 drew more than 1,300 spectators.[9] The project was nominated for the Obermayer Award 2020.[7]
A production of Mord im Orientexpress planned for 2020 was postponed twice because of the COVID-19 pandemic. For its 35th anniversary the group instead developed the programme WHY THEATRE? within two months, taking up a question posed by the director Milo Rau and NTGent during the lockdown; it was performed on 13 November 2021 for about 200 guests.[10][4] Mord im Orientexpress was finally staged in November 2022; the premiere in the sold-out hall drew about 250 spectators.[11][12]
In 2026, its 40th year, the group performed for the first time in the open air, with Robin Hood at the pond grounds (Weihergelände) in Hetzerath.[13] The crime comedy Jerry ist tot! by Stefan Schroeder, whose performances in November 2025 had been cancelled because a member of the cast fell ill, was rescheduled for November 2026.[14][13]
Repertoire
The group describes its focus as demanding plays from world literature, its own pieces and adaptations of current topics, staged with elaborate sets.[15] Alongside the productions on its main stage, it has presented Kleinkunst and satire evenings at irregular intervals since 1994, each under a new programme title.[16]

Organisation
In 2026 the group was one of five Hetzerath associations that organised the open-air series Kultur (er)leben at the Hetzerath pond, supported by the municipality; it had taken part in the planning since 2023.[13][5] For its Robin Hood performances the group donated one euro per ticket to two charities.[13]
