The Theatergruppe Obing is the amateur theatre section of the sports club TV Obing 1909 e. V. in Obing in the district of Traunstein, Upper Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1884 as a theatre society, it has played on the same stage at the Gasthof zur Post in Obing ever since, and its club describes it as one of the oldest village theatres in Upper Bavaria.[1]

History

The Theatergesellschaft was founded in Obing in 1884 by a handful of enthusiasts. Shortly afterwards Xaver Terofal came to Obing as tenant of the Gasthof zur Post and became involved with the theatre; he later co-founded the Schlierseer Bauerntheater, with which he took Bavarian folk theatre on tour as far as America in the early 20th century. The theatre group has belonged to the TV Obing since 1910.[1]

The group celebrated its 140th anniversary in August 2024 with a memorial service, three open-air performances of Franz Vogl's one-act play Giftige Schwammerl in the inn's beer garden and a gala evening on 17 August. At the gala, the Upper Bavarian district chairman of the Verband Bayerischer Amateurtheater e. V. noted that the group was 40 years older than the association itself and presented a certificate of honour; guests included groups from Amerang, Hemhof, Seeon, Kienberg and the Dorfbühne Sinich in South Tyrol.[1]

In 2024 the section revived its children's and youth theatre group, which performed Kleiner Frosch sucht große Liebe twice to sold-out audiences in November. In spring 2025 Winnie Abel's comedy Das Bahnhof-Komplott drew more than 1,000 spectators over two weekends.[2][3]

Repertoire

The group stages a three-act Bavarian comedy each spring in the hall of the Gasthof zur Post and a one-act play in the inn's beer garden in summer.[2][4] Productions reported by the club include Da Himme wart net, Die dappige Verwandtschaft, Casanova für Arme, Döner, Durst und Dosenwurst and Karibischer Trubel.[4] In summer 2026 it performed the one-act play Teufel an der Wand by Ridi Walfried in the beer garden and announced Ralph Wallner's Malefiz Donnerblitz for the following spring.[5]

Organisation

The theatre group is a section of the TV Obing 1909 e. V., a multi-sport club.[2][1]
