The Theatergruppe St. Matthäus Erlangen is an amateur theatre group of the parish of St. Matthäus in Erlangen, Middle Franconia, Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1983, it stages a comedy every year, with the premiere usually in January or February in the parish hall.[1]
History
The group's first production was the nativity play Das Hirtenbrot von Bethlehem on 1 December 1983, performed in the church, the Marienhospital, a rehabilitation home and for senior citizens' groups. In the early years it also staged fairy-tale plays such as Hänsel und Gretel and Jorinde und Joringel. The group marked its fifth anniversary in 1988, its 30th in 2013, its 35th in 2018 and its 40th in 2023.[1]
From 2000 the group was directed by Franz Bachtraegl and, after the season of 2020/21 was cancelled, by Johannes Illmer, who has written several of its recent plays himself, beginning with Zeitreise und andere Paradoxen in 2022. For January 2027 it announced another new play by him, Zu Risiken oder Nebenwirkungen.[1][2]
