Theaterspielkreis Saal a. d. Donau e. V. is an amateur theatre group in Saal an der Donau, district of Kelheim, Lower Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1990, it runs its own small venue, the theaterSAAL, and stages comedies, classics, Austrian folk plays, poetry evenings and plays devised by its members.[1][2]

History

The Theaterspielkreis was founded in 1990 and opened with Johann Nestroy's Lumpazivagabundus.[1][2] Most of its productions are staged in Saal an der Donau, but some have also been performed at several venues in the town and district of Kelheim and in Regensburg.[1] In 2018 the group received the district's art and culture prize for its production Kartoffelkathi, written and directed by its member Christine Stark.[3][4]

Repertoire

The repertoire ranges from Austrian Volksstücke by Johann Nestroy and Ferdinand Raimund and comedies by Carlo Goldoni and Ray Cooney to plays by Bavarian dialect authors and new pieces by Christine Stark. Since the 2020s the group has also presented evenings of ballads and poems, an annual Advent programme with Ludwig Thoma's Heilige Nacht, and plays devised by the cast. A youth group, at times called Mimikmonster, has its own productions.[2]
