The Theaterverein „Hiwinger Kliepänz“ is an amateur theatre club in Hübingen, a village in the Westerwaldkreis district of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Founded in 1997, it revived a village theatre tradition going back to the late 1920s and stages comedies in the village's Buchfinkenlandhalle every year.[1]
History
Theatre in Hübingen began around 1927/28, when the local male voice choir „Frohsinn“, founded in 1919, took up play-acting alongside its singing. Each New Year's Day it performed on the small stage of the village inn, the Gasthaus Trum (later Gasthaus Panorama), for about 120 spectators; a former player recalled Schiller's Die Räuber as one of the first plays. The tradition resumed after the Second World War; serious dramas such as Der Wilddieb were usually followed by a comic one-act play on the same evening, and in the mid-1950s the players gave guest performances in the neighbouring villages of Winden and Stahlhofen. The old company performed at the inn for the last time in 1962. In the 1970s and 1980s short comedies were still staged at the Christmas parties of the volunteer fire brigade.[1]
In the mid-1990s villagers took up the idea of reviving the tradition, and the theatre club „Hiwinger Kliepänz“ was founded in 1997. Its first production, Die Geschichte vom verlorenen Stinkerkäs, followed in 1998; the regional newspaper Westerwälder Zeitung wrote on 1 December 1998 that „das Volkstheater im Westerwald hat wieder einen Namen“ („folk theatre in the Westerwald has a name again“). In 2007 the club marked its tenth anniversary with an afternoon of reminiscences about the village's theatre history. At that time it had 13 active members, players and stage crew, and about 65 supporting members.[1]
Repertoire
The club plays comedies and farces. Productions in its first ten years included Gedächtnislücke, Bomels verrückte Heimkehr, Himmel und Hölle and Mit Küchenbenutzung.[1] In November 2025 the Theaterverein Hübingen presented a figure-theatre performance of Das Grüffelokind in the Buchfinkenlandhalle, a sequel to an earlier Grüffelo show.[2]
Venue
The club performs on the first weekend of Advent in the large hall of the Buchfinkenlandhalle in Hübingen. In 2007 its three annual performances drew about 700 spectators.[1]
