Theaterverein Edelweiß Schnaittach 1927 e. V. is an amateur theatre group in Schnaittach, district of Nürnberger Land, Middle Franconia, Germany. Founded in 1927 as the theatre group of a workers' sports club, it stages a three-act comedy each winter, in Franconian dialect since the 2000s.[1]
History
On 21 October 1927, eleven men and four women of the Arbeiter-, Turn- und Sportverein Schnaittach founded a theatre group, which staged its first play, Der Jager Franzl, in March 1928 in the Pfistersaal (today Gasthaus zur Post). The group soon performed up to four different plays a year; in 1931 it added a Schuhplattler dance group. On 11 April 1932 it became independent as Theaterverein Edelweiß Schnaittach and joined the Bavarian folk-play association. Besides folk plays it staged large plays with songs and operettas, among them an open-air Andreas Hofer with almost 100 participants in 1935.[1]
After 1933 the club was threatened with dissolution on the accusation of Marxist tendencies; chairman Leonhard Sperber secured its continuation, pointing among other things to the club's neutrality, illustrated by the fact that a Jewish woman, Emma Ullmann, had acted with it until 1934. From 1942 to 1945 activity ceased as almost all players were drafted. After the US occupation authorities gave permission, the club resumed in February 1946 with Almzauber and was re-founded on 1 November 1946. In 1952 a group of the Sudeten German association joined the club almost completely. It celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1953 with the consecration of its own banner and its 50th anniversary in 1977.[1]
A youth group was formed in 1972 and takes part every year in the Middle Franconian theatre days in Bad Windsheim. Franz Popp led the productions from 1962 to 2000; under his successor Hans Dotzler (2000–2010) the stage language changed from Upper Bavarian to Franconian dialect. The club was entered in the register of associations on 3 April 1995 and later acquired a former smithy on Nürnberger Straße as its club house.[1]

The repertoire ranges from Bavarian folk plays to boulevard comedies; each production is performed up to five or six times in the Badsaal in Schnaittach.[1]
