Theaterverein Gillenfeld e.V. is an amateur theatre group based in Gillenfeld, a municipality in the Vulkaneifel district of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It grew out of a play written for the village's 1000th anniversary in 2016, was constituted as an association in November 2016 and has staged one production a year since 2018, apart from a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic.[1][2]
History
The idea of a theatre group in Gillenfeld was raised in the second issue of the village newsletter Gillenfelder Vision in October 2013. Few people came to a first meeting on 29 April 2014, so the project was tied to the forthcoming celebrations of Gillenfeld's 1000th anniversary in 2016, and a new call for participants brought more interest. Over the following meetings the participants planned a play in four acts on the history of the village, cast the roles and began rehearsing; the local volunteer fire brigade lent its stage elements, and the municipality granted 500 euros towards the costs.[3]
The anniversary play was performed in late June 2016. Both scheduled performances sold out, and the cast added a third.[4][5] After the performances, many of the participants wanted to continue, and the Theaterverein Gillenfeld e.V. was founded at a meeting attended by 20 founding members on 21 November 2016, at which the association's statutes were adopted and a board elected.[1] At the end of 2016 the ensemble consisted of 19 actors and ten further people working on stage, props, make-up, costumes, lighting and sound;[6] in 2024 the figures were 18 actors and seven backstage helpers.[7]
The association's first production, the crime comedy Rendezvous mit einer Leiche, followed in 2018.[1] A production prepared for 2020 could not be staged because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and there was no production in 2021 either; performances resumed in 2022.[2]
Repertoire
The group's first play was a self-written history of Gillenfeld in four acts, covering the year 1016, when Emperor Henry II granted the village market, coinage and toll rights, the period of the French Revolution and the First French Empire, the Nazi era with the resistance of a local priest, and the present day. Some scenes were played in standard German and others in the Eifel dialect.[3][4] Since 2018 the association has staged one full-length play a year, among them crime comedies and comedies.[2]
