Theaterverein Grafenau e. V. is an amateur theatre group in the town of Grafenau, district of Freyung-Grafenau, Lower Bavaria, Germany. It was founded in 2008 to stage the local legend of the Brudersbrunn as an open-air play, and since then has also performed an autumn comedy each year.[1][2]
History
The club was not founded as a conventional amateur theatre club but with the aim of staging the old Grafenau legend of the Brudersbrunn as a large open-air play at the very place in the forest where it is set. Thirty-four founding members met in November 2008, and the club was entered in the register of associations in Passau on 14 January 2009. Financed partly through an EU LEADER application and donations from local businesses and citizens, the play with 44 speaking roles premiered on 18 June 2010 at the original location.[1][2] It was revived in 2011 at the same site and in 2015 at the Kulturpavillon in the spa park.[2]
For the 35th anniversary of Grafenau's partnership with Bergreichenstein (Kašperské Hory) and the 650th anniversary of the town, the club premiered the open-air history play 650 Jahre Stadt Grafenau by Eberhard Kreuzer, with more than 30 speaking roles, on 10 September 2026; it marked the start of a historical salt-trade caravan (Säumerzug) to Bergreichenstein.[3]
Repertoire
Besides the open-air plays, the club stages a comedy every autumn in the Grafenau parish hall and has performed satirical Singspiele at strong-beer festivals and short pieces at the town's Säumerfest.[2] Members have also appeared as extras in television documentaries by ZDF and BR.[4]
