Theaterverein Laetitia 1908 Untermeitingen e. V. is an amateur theatre group in Untermeitingen, district of Augsburg, Swabia, Bavaria, Germany. It traces its history to the Theatergesellschaft Laetitia founded in 1908, and today plays on three stages in the Imhofhalle: the Volkstheater (folk theatre), Das kleine Theater (boulevard comedies) and the children's and youth theatre Die Bühnenstrolche. In October 2026 it had 253 members.[1]
History
Theatre in Untermeitingen is documented back to 1899.[2] The Theatergesellschaft Laetitia – from the Latin word for joy – is recorded from 1908; the founding year is based on the programme of its 25th anniversary, celebrated on 12 and 19 February 1933.[3] Its stage was in the hall of the castle brewery (Schlossbrauerei), and it was led for many years by the parish priest Karl Bißle and the painter Eugen Maurer. Performances stopped during the First World War, and again during the Second. After 1945 members of the local football club revived the tradition, first in the inn Zur Sonne and then again in the castle hall, until the hall closed in 1958.[3]
After the opening of a new multi-purpose hall in 1969, a dozen young people began to play sketches and one-act plays again in December 1970. On 14 December 1972 they founded the Theatergruppe Untermeitingen, which gave its first performance on 22 April 1973 and was renamed Laienspielgruppe Untermeitingen in 1974.[3] From 1974 to 1977 it was merged with the local music society as Musikverein und Laienspielgruppe Untermeitingen. It was entered in the register of associations on 15 May 1984, when it had 85 members. In 1985 it founded a children's and youth group, named Die Bühnenstrolche in 1989.[3] In 1987 the name of the 1908 society was added to the club's name, and in January 1994 it adopted its present name, Theaterverein Laetitia 1908 – Untermeitingen e. V.[3] Das kleine Theater was added in 2006.[4] There were no productions in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.[2]
Repertoire
The Volkstheater stages one comedy or folk play a year, traditionally in the local dialect as well as in standard German, with food and drink served to the audience during performances.[2] Das kleine Theater plays boulevard comedies in the small hall of the Imhofhalle, mostly with actors who started in the youth group.[4] Die Bühnenstrolche perform mainly fairy-tale plays, with performances over the Christmas holidays; its members are trained by the club and attend courses of the Verband Bayerischer Amateurtheater e. V.[5]
