Theaterverein Otting is an amateur theatre group in Otting, a village in Waging am See, district of Traunstein, Upper Bavaria, Germany. The group has played since 1978 and was constituted as a club in 1986; it has staged a children's fairy-tale play every spring since 1988, alongside Bavarian comedies and special productions.[1]

History

Plays were already performed in Otting before 1900, and villagers kept up the tradition after both world wars. In the mid-1970s a group of young people from the local Catholic rural youth (KLJB), on the initiative of Hanni Schallinger, revived the theatre, at first with Bavarian one-act plays for senior citizens' afternoons and village evenings. In 1978 they staged their first three-act play, Zweimal Burgl, at the Gasthof Krautenbacher in Holzhausen.[1]

The players decided in 1985 to found a club; the founding meeting, with 21 founding members, took place on 12 January 1986 at the Gasthaus Krautenbacher. In the same year the club joined the Bund Deutscher Amateurtheater (BDAT), whose courses in lighting and sound, make-up and scene painting its members could attend.[1] With a growing number of active members, the club staged its first children's fairy tale, Frau Holle, in spring 1988, and after its success decided to perform a fairy tale every year.[1]

For the 1250th anniversary of Otting parish in 1999, the club staged the open-air play Graf Gunther's Seelenheil oder s'Kloster z'Otting by Franz Patzelt, directed by Andreas Haberlander, with a set wall 30 metres long and 7 metres high, a stand for 600 spectators and almost 100 extras from the area. From 2001 it also put on nativity plays with child actors in the Pfarrstadl (parish barn) in Otting.[1] In March 2020 the run of Das Dschungelbuch was stopped after the first weekend by the COVID-19 pandemic; performances resumed in spring 2023 with Die kleine Hexe.[1]

Repertoire

Besides traditional Bavarian farces, the club has staged classics such as Der vor- und alpenländische Faust and works by Ludwig Thoma and Karl Valentin. The club counts among its highlights its own production of Der Brandner Kaspar in Andreas Haberlander's version (1995), revived in the Pfarrstadl in 2004 and newly staged in 2018 with an "ascension to heaven" effect.[1] The fairy-tale plays are often revived, such as Urmel aus dem Eis (1996, 2004, 2013, 2025).[2]

The group first played at the Gasthof Krautenbacher in Holzhausen. Nativity plays and some larger productions take place in the Pfarrstadl in Otting.[1]
