History

The first known theatre group in Schöngeising was led in the 1920s by the violinist Heinrich Scherrer. In 1946 Johann Friedinger founded a new group, which played for twenty years in the large hall of the Gasthaus zur Post until the hall closed.[1]

In 1970 young villagers led by Herbert Berndt revived the theatre. They bought an old stage from a neighbouring village, restored it and set it up in the Alte Schule (old school), where they performed two one-act plays in March 1971, followed by their first three-act play, Der verbannte Amor, later that year. In 1972 the founding meeting of the registered association was held, and the club joined the Volksspielkunstverband Bayern (today the Verband Bayerischer Amateurtheater e. V.).[1] In 1978 the municipality gave the club the use of the ground-floor hall of the former new school building, where it installed a permanent stage.[1] By 1988 it had 300 members, making it the second-largest club in the village after the sports club.[1]

In 1993 a donation from the proceeds of Ziag di aus Josef to the new parish hall was refused, an episode that was reported in the regional press. For its 25th anniversary in 1996 the club consecrated a standard, with the Theatergemeinschaft Mammendorf as sponsor.[1] Since 2002 it has staged a children's play at its Christmas party, and since 2010 it has also played on Sunday afternoons.[1]

Repertoire

The club plays Bavarian comedies, farces and one-act plays. From 1971 into the 2000s it usually gave two productions a year, in spring and autumn; since 2012 it has generally staged one production in spring.[2]
