The group originated in 1998 in the village renewal programme of the then district of Daun, when a working group on housing and quality of life took up the idea of a theatre group. Start-up capital of 3,000 Deutsche Mark was borrowed from the local music society, and the project was later supported by the village renewal programme; members built the stage, curtain and technical equipment themselves. The association was officially founded on 9 March 1999, and its first play, Vater braucht eine Frau, was performed in mid-March 1999. In August 1999 it was recognised as a non-profit and joined the Landesverband Amateurtheater Rheinland-Pfalz e. V.[1]
The association's stated aims are staging plays, maintaining local customs and preserving the Steffeln dialect. Children from Steffeln and the neighbouring villages of Auel and Lehnerath are invited free of charge to the dress rehearsal. Since 2001 a youth group has staged its own play every second year at the village's Advent bazaar.
