The Theodissa-Bühne-Diez e.V. (also Theodissa-Bühne Diez) is an amateur theatre group in Diez in the Rhein-Lahn-Kreis, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.[1] It stages one production a year, mainly comedies, partly in the Hessian-Nassau dialect, and in recent years murder mystery dinners, in Diez and neighbouring villages.[1][2]

History

The group grew out of a course at the local Volkshochschule in 1989 and became an independent registered association in 1991.[2] Its founder also wrote the plays it performed in its first five seasons.[2][3] In 1997 the group hosted the annual meeting of the Landesverband Amateurtheater Rheinland-Pfalz e. V. in Diez, and in 1998 it took part in a television recording by SWR.[2]

In 2014 the association had 99 members and had counted 451 visitors in the previous season, but only six active performers. Instead of a full-length play it therefore staged an evening of one-act plays and sketches, and it gave no guest performances that year.[4] The single performance in November 2014 drew about 270 spectators.[3]

During the COVID-19 pandemic the 2020 production was cancelled and rehearsals moved to Zoom; in 2021 the group published recorded sketches on YouTube.[5][6] The group counts its anniversaries from the 1991 registration and celebrated its 20th, 25th and 30th anniversaries in 2011, 2016 and 2021.[7][8][2]

Repertoire

The group's repertoire consists mainly of comedies by authors such as Walter G. Pfaus, some of them in local dialect.[2][3] Since 2017 it has regularly staged murder mystery and "Gruseldinner" (horror dinner) productions in which the audience is invited to guess the culprit.[2][9]

Venue

The group has no theatre of its own and rehearses weekly in the Haus der Vereine in the Diez district of Freiendiez.[18] In the 2010s it performed in the SV-Halle in Freiendiez and the Lahnblickhalle in Altendiez.[10][8] Later productions were staged in a restaurant, in a car dealership's premises in Diez (2025) and, from 2026, in a restaurant in Heistenbach with an additional performance in the village hall of Wasenbach.[11][16][9]

Organisation

Besides its annual production, the group has given sketch evenings, including on the open-air stage (Seebühne) in the Diez Generationspark in 2018 and 2019, and held a clown workshop in 2019.[2][12] It has taken part in the Diez carnival parade (Dreierbundzug), ran a small spring market in 2022 and presented itself at the town's Vereinsgarage club fair in 2025.[19][2][18] Members also go on theatre trips, for example to Lübeck in 2016 and to Augsburg with a visit to the Augsburger Puppenkiste in 2025.[20][21]

Awards

In 2019 the group received the Kulturpreis der Stadt Diez, the culture prize of the town of Diez.[2][22]
