Volksbühne Dachau e. V. is an amateur theatre group in Dachau, Upper Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1965 as the Ostler-Bühne, a section of the sports club SSV Dachau-Ost, it has played in the Ludwig-Thoma-Haus in Dachau's old town since 1975, staging two comedies a year with food served during performances.[1][2]
History
The sports club SSV Dachau-Ost was founded in 1949 in the former concentration camp, then used as a refugee camp. From 1952 its members performed short plays at the club's Christmas party, first at the camp's inn, later at the Gasthaus Hupfloher, until the inn closed at the end of the 1950s.[1] At its 1965 general meeting the SSV founded a theatre section, the Ostler-Bühne, to cultivate the Bavarian dialect through Bavarian comedies. The retired professional actor Horst Braun became its director for 22 years, and the first production, Maximilian Vitus's Die drei Eisbären, was given in October 1965 in the former Capitol cinema in the emergency church of Hl. Kreuz.[1]
In 1975 the group moved to the Ludwig-Thoma-Haus and, seeking a more neutral name, renamed itself Volksbühne Dachau. There it introduced tables and hot food during the performances, and from 1978 staged two plays a year. After Braun's accidental death in 1987, who had directed 33 productions, Antonia Schendzilorz and from 1989 Roland Strobl took over; Strobl directed more than 50 productions over 26 years and also chaired the club. During the renovation of the Ludwig-Thoma-Haus in 1992–94, and again in 2003, the group played in the hall of the Red Cross building.[1]
Repertoire
The group plays comedies, originally Bavarian dialect farces and more recently boulevard comedies in two acts, with a spring and an autumn production each year.[1][3]
