Volksbühne Mering e. V. is an amateur theatre group in Mering, district of Aichach-Friedberg, Swabia, Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1974 by Martin Schallermeier as a folk theatre (Volkstheater), it has been a marionette theatre since 1994, staging mainly fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm.[1][2]

History

The club was founded in 1974 and staged folk plays with actors for about two decades.[1][3] At the end of this era, chairman Martin Schallermeier and Kurt Schiller turned to marionette theatre, advised by the marionette stage in Kaufbeuren. Between 1994 and 2014 Schallermeier wrote and directed ten marionette plays, for which Schiller built about 40 marionettes. After Schallermeier's death in 2015 the club continued with new productions such as Des Kaisers neue Kleider (2015) and Vom Fischer und seiner Frau (2017).[2] The club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024.[3]

Repertoire

The marionette productions are based mainly on Grimm fairy tales and one play is staged each November.[2][4][1]
