Volksbühne Olching is an amateur theatre group in Olching, district of Fürstenfeldbruck, Upper Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1926 as the Dramatischer Club „Frohsinn“, it plays Bavarian comedies in spring and autumn on the stage in the former hall of the Metzgerwirt inn (now the Cantina) in Olching, which has existed since 1926.[1]

History

The club was founded in 1926 by Andreas Seiler as the dramatic club „Frohsinn“ with 15 members, and from the start it was based at the Metzgerwirt inn. Its first performance, on 12 December 1926, was the duo scene Baron Schreckenstein und sein Diener, with the Olching ambulance band (Sanitätskapelle) taking part. The club was banned in Nazi Germany and was revived by Brunhilde Singer in 1946.[1]

From 1948, starting with Der Brandner Kaspar, the club staged a light comedy every spring and a folk play, drama or serious play every autumn; by 2016 it had staged more than 180 titles. Since then the repertoire has shifted towards comedies and farces (Schwänke), which the club's own history notes with some regret, because dramatic plays are a greater challenge for the actors.[1]

In 1961, for the 700th anniversary of the Cistercian abbey founded at Olching, from which Fürstenfeld Abbey emerged, the club and the drama group of the Olching Kolping family performed the historical festival play Das Sühnestift für die schöne Brabanterin on 15 July 1961 with about 65 performers. It was directed by Franz Sagerer (Kolping) and Josef Limbacher (dramatic club).[1]

The dramatic club took the name Volksbühne Olching in the late 1960s; the club's website gives both 1966 (its 40th anniversary) and 1969.[1] In 1970 it won a competition held by the Bayerischer Landesverein für Heimatpflege together with Bayerischer Rundfunk with Seine Majestät der Kurgast.[1]

In 1986 the youth theatre group „vis a vis“ grew out of the Volksbühne and staged modern boulevard plays. It was part of the Volksbühne until 2002, was then based at the Amperlust until 2004, and has since been a touring group offering sketches and workshops.[1]

In 2021 the club staged its first open-air production.[2]

Repertoire

Productions named on the club's website include Ludwig Thoma's Magdalena and Ludwig Anzengruber's Der Meineidbauer.[1] Director Ingrid Klameth (Schediwy) had written six plays for the club by 2016, all premiered on its stage; the first was Die drei Schönen vom Berghof (1989).[1]
