Volksspielgruppe Altenerding e. V. is an amateur theatre association in Erding, Upper Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1920 in the then village of Altenerding, it has staged Bavarian folk plays, comedies, children's theatre and open-air productions on local history, among them the Schwedenspiele about the Thirty Years' War in Erding.[1][2]
History
In 1918 the master carpenter Martin Obermeier and his assistant began staging plays in Altenerding, and in 1920 they formally founded the theatre association.[1] Its first production under the director Jakob Stimmer was Der Meineidbauer (1920).[3] Under National Socialism the association, like all German clubs, was brought into line (Gleichschaltung) and had to put the prefix "KdF" (Kraft durch Freude) before its name; according to its chronicle it kept playing its own repertoire. Performances stopped in 1939, when the players went to war, and resumed in 1947 in the hall of the Adlberger inn.[1]
In 1962 a general meeting debated dissolving the association after the older members withdrew; Josef (Sepp) Beil, who had first appeared on stage in 1949 at the age of twelve, took over as chairman with a few younger members. Beil led the association as chairman and director for more than 40 years and died in 2013.[1] From the 1970s the association turned increasingly to open-air productions and to plays with a link to the town or district of Erding, staged from 1984 also in the newly opened Stadthalle.[2] For the 750th anniversary of Erding in 1978, Beil staged the open-air play Erding anno 1632 (the Schwedenspiele) in front of the Schöner Turm, for which the main road through the town was closed for six weeks; the play was revived in 1991, 1996, 2003, 2009 and 2022.[1]
The association celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2010 with a gala evening in the Stadthalle.[1] Its centenary production of Ludwig Thoma's Magdalena, planned for July 2020 at the Erding farmhouse museum with about 80 participants,[4] and the centenary celebration were postponed to 2021 and then cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.[1] As of 2026 the association has more than 250 members.[2]
Repertoire
The early repertoire consisted of rural Bavarian plays performed in inn back rooms and school stages; later productions include folk plays, comedies, children's theatre, documentary plays on local history and black light theatre.[2][3] Since 2010 the association has also appeared in themed guided tours of Erding, and since 2017 it has had a youth section, the Junges Theater.[3]

Venue
The association's home stage is in the gymnasium hall (Turnhalle) of Altenerding, which was rebuilt in 1982 to meet new technical requirements.[1] Larger productions are staged in the Stadthalle Erding, opened in 1984, and open-air productions in front of the Schöner Turm and, since 2017, at the Erding farmhouse museum (Bauernhausmuseum).[2][3]
Organisation
The association has organised a living nativity scene in Advent since 1983, and has taken part in town events such as the Erding Volksfest parade (2003, 2015) and the 1200th anniversary of Oberhummel (2008).[3][1] It has toured to Mszczonów in Poland several times and has an improvisational theatre group.[3][5] The Bauerntheater Ismaning was the sponsoring association when the group's new banner was consecrated in 2003.[1]
Awards
In 1986 the association received the Kulturpreis des Landkreises Erding, the culture prize of the district of Erding, together with the Liedertafel Isen and the Volkstrachtenverein „Goldachtaler Eicherloh“; the prize was presented to chairman Sepp Beil on 28 November 1986.[7][8]
