Waldbühne Halsbach is an amateur theatre group and open-air forest stage in Halsbach, district of Altötting, Upper Bavaria, Germany, run by the Landvolktheater Halsbach e. V. It was founded in 1983 by the farmer and playwright Martin Winklbauer with three friends to present the history of Halsbach on stage; its ensemble has grown to more than 200 performers of all ages.[1][2]
History
Winklbauer and three young men from the Catholic rural youth movement laid the foundation for the group in the early 1980s, aiming at something different from the usual rural comedy.[3] Its first production, Winklbauer's historical play Das schwarze Jahr, premiered in 1984 in the Gallersöder Stadl, a barn; Bayerischer Rundfunk filmed it with the director Jo Baier.[3][4] Winklbauer later built a permanent open-air stage in his woodland at the Spielhof.[3]
After 2013 the group paused its performances; a revival of Das schwarze Jahr planned for 2020 was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and took place in 2022.[5]
Repertoire
The group's productions are mainly historical plays by Martin Winklbauer about the history of Halsbach.[1][4] Das schwarze Jahr is set in the winter of 1742/43, when the Pandurs of Franz von der Trenck were quartered in Halsbach during the War of the Austrian Succession, and follows a blacksmith's family through the occupation; mounted Pandurs gallop onto the stage.[6] In 2024 the play was staged for the 40th time.[6]

Organisation
Winklbauer and other villagers also started the Halsbacher Waldweihnacht, an Advent Christmas market around the Waldbühne that draws tens of thousands of visitors; the Halsbach theatre choir sings there.[3]
