History

According to the society, theatre had already been played in Walle in 1960. The present group came into being when the Waller Heimatverein was founded in April 1988. The first Plattdeutscher Heimatabend took place in November 1988 in the hall of the inn Zum Alten Krug. The group was led by Peter Junge from 1988 to 1990, by Ingrid Salomon from 1990 to 2006, and since 2006 by Anja Jacobs, who also directs and chooses the plays.[1]

The Heimatabende combined sketches, short pieces and a traditional one-act play with contributions from the society's other groups. In 2006 the society added a theatre evening with buffet and a "breakfast theatre". When the Alter Krug closed in 2007, the Heimatabend moved for the first time in 19 years, to the gymnasium of the Walle primary school, which members converted into a small theatre with stage and curtain. That season the group also gave a guest performance in Scharnhorst. In 2008 the Heimatabend was moved to April 2009, but because attendance was disappointing it returned to November afterwards. In 2010, after a fire at the new sports hall, the evening was held in the theatre room of the society's Heimathaus.[1]

From 2017 to 2019 the group performed a full three-act play for the first time, with six or seven performances each year for 105 spectators seated at tables. No performance took place in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021 a three-act play was staged again under restrictions, with audiences reduced to 60 and eleven instead of seven performances.[1]

Repertoire

The group plays comedies in Low German. Productions mentioned by the society include the one-act play Up'n Standesamt (1988), Eskimoflip by Burkhard Junker (2002), and Dat Bahn Chaos, which premiered on 3 November 2023. A further production premiered on 31 October 2025 and was reported on by the Verdener Aller-Zeitung.[1]

Recognition

In 2022 several long-standing members of the group were honoured by the Bund Deutscher Amateurtheater (BDAT), as reported by the Verdener Aller-Zeitung on 13 June 2022.[1]
