Wohltätigkeitsbühne Quierscheid

The "Wohltätigkeitsbühne Quierscheid" ("Charity Stage Quierscheid") was founded in 1920 and performed in its early days mainly Singspiel and operetta. Today their repertoire is mainly based on comedy and light drama.

The "Wohltätigkeitsbühne" has always lived up to its charitable commitment, as documented in its name. While the initial focus after the two World Wars was on alleviating the consequences, the association subsequently dedicated its social engagement to retirement homes, orphanages, kindergartens, the church, and the fire department. It also supported the "Aktion Sorgenkind" ("Action for Children in Need") initiative.Today they have around 90 members, from all strata of society, aged between 18 and 70 years, and 12 young members.

They cooperate with other local associations to organize masked balls, variety evenings, and excursions.

History

It was during the difficult period following World War I that several members of the Quierschied War Veterans' and War Widows' Association took the initiative to found a theater group. Besides reviving local cultural activities, the primary goal was to make the net proceeds of the performances available to those in need.

The founding meeting was convened by Johann Quinten, Johann Hoffmann, and Peter Keller for May 16, 1920, at the Högel Inn. The seven women and thirty men present adopted bylaws that enshrined social welfare as the purpose of the group's performances. Accordingly, they named themselves the "Charity Stage" ("Wohltätigkeitsbühne").

The first performance Mutter und Sohn (Mother and Son) was a full success and encouraged them to continue performing drama, operetta and comedy. With their performances they became regionally acknowledged and organized in 1925 the regional costume festival on behalf of the "Theatre Union of Saarland". In 1928 they performed together with the theatre society "Glashütte" the drama Andreas Hofer open air in the "Wolfsschlucht" involving 80 performers. They continued this tradition of open air performances until 1949. In the first ten years of their history they had up to 200 members, during the 1950s they were reduced to ca. 70 members.

During the NS regime they continued performing under the name of "Volksbühne". After the Second World War the theatre society was re-established in 1947 and took on its original name of "Wohltätigkeitsbühne". In the 1950s they successfully performed Singspiel and operetta and moved their performances in 1955 to the new gym of the sports association "Turnverein Quierscheid" where a stage had been built in.

In 1958 and 1968 the "Wohltätigkeitsbühne" organized the congress and festival of the "Saarländische Volksbühnenbund" ("Union of the Folk Theatres in Saarland") where non-professional theatre from Germany and the neighboring countries met. In 1964 they established a theatre group for young performers and continued to organize charity performances and events.
